What it is

Open interest is the total value of futures positions that are open right now. Every position has a long side and a short side. When the figure climbs quickly, more leverage has entered the market.

How to read it

Rising interest with a rising price suggests new money behind the move. A sudden drop often means positions were closed or liquidated.
